![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I understand that the treatment of women as perpetually crying with gaping wet mouths while pink flesh puckers through holes in their tights is a POV thing, revealing the protagonist's misogyny and distaste for the physicality of femininity. Who refers to birds as 'feathered songsters', for heaven's sake? Dame Iris's philosophical alter ego is also much in evidence, and we are treated to long disquisitions on art and love which, while emphasising the self-reflexivity of the novel, also contribute to the protagonist 's verbosity and (pace this is an audio book) love of the sound of his own voice. ![]() The ponderous literary style, characteristic of the protagonist, is nonetheless so pompous and elaborated that I laughed out loud sometimes - when I wasn't telling him get on with it, we've got the point. The author knows what she's doing, but for me certainly, what she's doing is dated and irritating in the extreme. This is not to belittle the liveliness of the characters' exchanges or the cleverness of the plotting. Perhaps back then we were more tolerant of a self-centred middle-aged man droning on and on about his obsessions, but it makes for tedious listening now. It seems the way we read, and the way fiction is written, have changed a lot since 1973. ![]()

The swings from horror to humor make you feel the movement that much more sharply. But this isn’t that kind of winking, self-aware anachronism-it’s not quite clear what it is. Plenty of ahistorical fictions loosely, and cheekily, tied to actual events have appeared in various forms in recent years see: The Great, The Young Pope, The Favourite, etc. And Powley’s Gies appears early on as the kind of free spirit-sleeping in till noon, galavanting all night with her single girlfriends, picking up men in bars, having unguarded conversations with her gay brother about his sexual preferences-that it’s a bit hard to believe mid-century morals would encourage. (The Frank family emigrated from Austria to the Netherlands in 1933.) No one here, thankfully, seems determined to interpret a Dutch accent. Bel Powley, who plays Gies, doesn’t mask her London accent, while Liev Schreiber, playing Otto Frank with heartbreaking gravitas, inflects his speaking voice with the Viennese intonation that Otto Frank would have possessed. It is also hard to watch-at least at first-because the show is poised somewhat awkwardly between historical verisimilitude and embracing a more modern sensibility. ![]() ![]() A Small Light is hard to watch for all these reasons: You know the story, you know the tragic end. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All I Ever Wanted is a brilliant coming-of-age novel for teens which, like Honey Browns The Good Daughter, might be enjoyed by adults too. ![]() ![]() ![]() The ensuing fourteen-hour battle-and eventual victory-cost eight men their lives. On October 3, 2009, after years of constant smaller attacks, the Taliban finally decided to throw everything they had at Keating. Three years after its construction, the army was finally ready to concede what the men on the ground had known immediately: it was simply too isolated and too dangerous to defend. ![]() In 2009, Clinton Romesha of Red Platoon and the rest of the Black Knight Troop were preparing to shut down Command Outpost (COP) Keating, the most remote and inaccessible in a string of bases built by the US military in Nuristan and Kunar in the hope of preventing Taliban insurgents from moving freely back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan. “‘It doesn't get better.’ To us, that phrase nailed one of the essential truths, maybe even the essential truth, about being stuck at an outpost whose strategic and tactical vulnerabilities were so glaringly obvious to every soldier who had ever set foot in that place that the name itself-Keating-had become a kind of backhanded joke.” The only comprehensive, firsthand account of the fourteen-hour firefight at the Battle of Keating by Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha, for readers of Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden and Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's a delightful story: mix in a runaway heiress, a no nonsense businessman, a farm with animals and four adorable children, and you got a story that will make you laugh and cry at the same time!
